The oldest name of Gurkovo is Kulopchii. In 1974 the village of Gurkovo became a town. It is a town and a municipality which include 10 settlements with 5685 residents. It part of Stara Zagora Province. Gurkovo municipality is one of the youngest municipalities in the country, established only in 1997. It is situated in the central part of South Bulgaria, enclosed between Stara Planina and Sredna Gora Mountains, in the eastern part of the Valley of Roses. Gurkovo Municipality includes seven rural settlements with the town of Gurkovo as the administrative centre, where more than half of the population lives. Two important transportation routes pass through the territory of the municipality – Hainboaz Pass (the Pass of the Republic), connecting North and South Bulgaria and the motor way and the Sub-Balkan railway line Sofia-Burgas. Gurkovo. is located 40-50 km from important administrative and economic centres in the region like Stara Zagora, Kazanlak, Nova Zagora, Sliven and Veliko Turnovo are The climate in Gurkovo municipality is mild continental. The Tundzha river flows through its territory, while its southern part in occupied by Zhrebchevo dam. The climate and soils are favourable for cultivating oil-bearing plants and vine. Vegetables, wheat, barley, fruit-trees are also grown in the region. The environment conditions are also conducive for stock-breeding – mostly pigs, sheep, goats and cows. The region is ecologically clean. There are no big industrial polluters. The municipality could become an attractive place for rest, tourism, hunting and fishing because of its proximity to Balkan Mountain, marvelous nature and the numerous mountain chalets and rest houses.
